National Car Giveaway Contest App Drives Billboard Music Awards Voting and Contest

Billboard, one of the most recognizable names in the music industry, engaged JBS to assist with their 2013 Billboard Music Awards “Milestone Award” online voting for a special artist award and car giveaway.

The project included a live, public on-line voting form fans could use to identify their favorite artist, complete a car giveaway contest entry form, dashboard metrics and a performance review of Billboard’s CMS database to find ways to get performance improvements before a large amount of visitors started to use it. A key goal of the new app was to shift queries wait times from minutes to milliseconds to keep up with the flood of contest entries and fan voting.

JBS Custom Solution

JBS developed a custom solution written in NodeJS and deployed with Amazon Elastic Beanstalk to orchestrate over a hundred EC2 instances behind multiple Elastic Load Balancers, storing data in Amazon DynamoDB NoSQL in order to collect and report on these votes and contest entries. Artist voting was load tested to over 30k votes per second and contest entries to 14k submissions per second to ensure a nationwide audience on a major television network during primetime wouldn’t lead to the site going down. After the contest JBS extracted all of the contest entries into files for each sponsor and the contest administrator to choose a winner.
